Instagram and AI persona accounts
On Instagram you label the whole account as AI. Some posts need an extra label on top.
Allowed with the AI profile label
The label at a glance
- What it is called
- Account: “AI-generated profile”. Post: “Add AI label”.
- Where you set it
- Profile → Edit profile → AI-generated profile. For one post: the “Add AI label” switch when you create the post.
- When you need it
- You need the account label if you regularly post content that shows an AI-generated person. You need the post label only for photorealistic video or realistic audio. Meta does not ask you to label AI-generated images.
- If you skip it
- If Meta believes your account is an AI-generated profile and you have not labelled it, the account is not shown in recommendations until you add the label. Meta tells you first, and you can appeal in Account Status.
- Labels AI by itself?
- Yes. Instagram reads C2PA and IPTC data in the file and adds the label itself.
If your persona posts only still images, the account label is the one you need. The post label does not apply to images. Meta says the label “will neither help nor hurt your account’s reach”. So the penalty is only for a missing label.

What this means for you
If your account regularly posts content that shows an AI-generated person, Instagram expects it to carry the “AI-generated profile” label. You set it under Edit profile. This label replaced the older “AI creator” label on 31 August 2026. The “Add AI label” switch on a single post is a separate rule and covers less. Meta requires it for photorealistic video and realistic audio. Meta does not ask you to label AI-generated images. So if your persona posts only still images, the account label is the one you need.
Without the label you lose recommendations. If Meta believes your account is an AI-generated profile and you have not labelled it, the account is not shown in recommendations until you add the label. Meta tells you first, and you can appeal in Account Status. Meta also says the label itself “will neither help nor hurt your account’s reach”. So the penalty is only for a missing label.
Meta also labels AI images itself. Since 2024 it has read the C2PA and IPTC metadata in a file to do that. If your export step removes that metadata, that changes what Meta labels automatically. It does not change what you have to label yourself.
What changed, and when
Meta launched Meta One, with clickable links in Instagram reels from $49.99 a month
Meta launched Meta One, a paid subscription for Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp. The creator plans start at $14.99 a month (Essential, with the verified badge) and $49.99 a month (Advanced, with clickable links in up to 4 posts and 4 reels a month and shared access without a password). The badge needs a passed identity check, and the verified profile name must match the legal name on your ID. So an AI persona cannot carry the badge under its own name. The other features do not depend on the check.

The "AI creator" label became "AI-generated profile"
If the person your account shows is AI-generated, Instagram expects the account to carry the new label. Accounts without it are shown less to non-followers in recommendations. A growing account depends on that traffic. Using AI only as a tool for editing or captions is not covered.
Correction, : The reach claim above was too broad. Meta’s own wording is narrower: accounts it believes are AI-generated profiles and have not labelled themselves "may see limits to their account’s reach by becoming ineligible to appear in recommendations until they add the profile label". So the account is taken out of recommendations completely. It is not just shown a little less. This only affects accounts Meta has identified. Meta tells you first, and you can appeal in Account Status. Meta also says that using the label "will neither help nor hurt your account’s reach". One more point: the post label is required only for photorealistic video or realistic audio. Meta does not ask you to label AI-generated images. So if your persona posts only still images, the account label is the one you need.

Meta moved “AI info” into the menu for content only edited with AI
Content that Meta detects as changed or edited with AI now has the label in the post’s menu and no longer on the post itself. Content detected as AI-generated keeps the visible label. That label also says whether it was flagged by industry signals or by the person who posted. So the label itself now shows the difference between edited and generated.
"Made with AI" was renamed "AI info" after it mislabelled real photos
Meta renamed the label in all its apps after photographers found that normal retouching triggered it. The detection did not change. It still reads C2PA and IPTC metadata. The problem was the old name, which said more than the metadata could prove. The same metadata decides whether a generated image gets a label at all.
Meta announced the first "Made with AI" labels
Meta announced labels for a wider range of video, audio and image content. They are applied when Meta detects industry-standard AI indicators, and they appeared on organic (unpaid) content from May 2024. These were the first in a series of labels that ended with the AI-generated profile label on the account.
Meta said it would label AI images by reading C2PA and IPTC signals
Meta announced that it would label images on Facebook, Instagram and Threads when it detects industry-standard AI indicators in C2PA and IPTC metadata. It also added a disclosure tool that it would require for photorealistic video and realistic audio, with penalties for not using it. So Meta would detect still images itself, and the person posting would not have to declare them. That is the reason removing this metadata matters.
