In short
- Fanvue does not withhold tax. You have to pay tax on your earnings yourself, where you live.
- Every creator completes a tax interview: a W-9 in the US, a W-8BEN or W-8BEN-E elsewhere. Without it, payouts pause.
- US creators get a 1099-K by 31 January when payments were more than $20,000 in more than 200 transactions.
- The 1099-K shows gross earnings before fees, refunds and chargebacks, so it is higher than your payouts. The IRS says the difference is deductible.
- Fanvue charges VAT to fans at checkout. A creator's VAT registration does not change what fans pay.
On this page
Fanvue (affiliate link, opens in a new tab) does not take tax out of your earnings. It collects your tax details, sends US creators above the threshold a 1099-K, and handles VAT on what fans pay. You have to report everything else yourself, where you live. This article is general information about the forms. It is not tax advice.
Creators are responsible for paying tax on their earnings under their own country’s rules, and “Fanvue does NOT withhold any taxes on behalf of the creator, like some other platforms do.” Creators unsure of their obligations should “consult an independent financial advisor or accountant to discuss your tax situation.”

The tax interview: W-9 or W-8BEN
Every creator completes a short tax interview before requesting payouts, whatever they earn. US creators complete a W-9. Non-US creators complete a W-8BEN as individuals, sole traders or freelancers, or a W-8BEN-E as a business entity. A creator who does not provide tax information has payout requests paused after a grace period. The 1099-K reports a US creator’s gross earnings for the tax year and arrives by 31 January of the following year: “It’s not a bill - it’s a record of your gross earnings that you (or your accountant) use when filing your tax return”. The amounts reflect earnings before platform fees, refunds and chargebacks, and the 1099-K process does not apply to non-US creators who do not earn from US sources.

“Give Form W-8 BEN to the withholding agent or payer if you are a foreign person and you are the beneficial owner of an amount subject to withholding.”
If you are outside the US, the W-8BEN tells FanvueFanvue Fanvue is a subscription content platform that officially allows AI creators and labels them as AI. Open the glossary that you are not a US person. It is not a tax return, and it does not decide what you owe in your own country.
Why the 1099-K shows more than you were paid
Third party settlement organizations “are required to report payments on Form 1099-K when the total amount of payments you receive for goods or services through the platform exceeds $20,000 in more than 200 transactions.”

“The gross payment amount isn’t adjusted for any: Fees, Credits, Refunds, Shipping, Cash equivalents, Discounts. These items are not taxable income. You can deduct them from the gross amount.” Self-employed people report the income on Schedule C, and “Even if you don’t get a Form 1099-K, if you received payments for goods, services or property, you must report your income.”

The 85% earning rate offered to creators who joined Fanvue in 2022 has come to an end, and the platform is transitioning to its standard 80% rate.

In the first year, almost everyone is surprised that the form shows more than their bank account received. This example uses round numbers. It is not anyone’s real year:
| Line | Amount |
|---|---|
| Gross fan payments, as reported on the 1099-K | $30,000 |
| Fanvue’s share at the standard 80% earning rate | −$6,000 |
| Refunds and chargebacks during the year | −$1,000 |
| Roughly what reached the creator | $23,000 |
The 1099-K says $30,000, and the payouts add up to about $23,000. The IRS page above says the fees and refunds in between are not taxable income, and you can deduct them from the gross amount. So your own records of fees and refunds matter more than the form. The exact figures depend on the refunds and chargebacks you had during the year. The payout calculator works out the platform share for a monthly target.
How Fanvue handles VAT
“Whether or not you’re registered does not affect the price fans pay - Fanvue already applies the correct VAT at checkout.” Creators can add a VAT number under Settings, Tax, and once it is verified, “Your VAT/GST number appears on every payout invoice.” The rate of VAT, and whether the reverse charge mechanism applies, “depend on the country where you’re registered.”

Whether you have to register for VAT depends on the rules of your own country. Ask an accountant. Fanvue’s page only answers the platform side: fans pay the same price either way, and once you are registered, your number is on the payout invoice.
What the sources do not say
Finding a year-end tax statement for non-US creators
The plan was to tell creators outside the US which year-end document Fanvue sends them, like the 1099-K for US creators. Fanvue’s tax pages do not describe one.
They explain the W-8BEN. They say the 1099-K process does not apply to non-US creators without US-source income. They mention that a verified VAT number appears on payout invoices. None of the three Fanvue pages read for this article names an annual statement for anyone outside the US.
So if you are outside the US, you file from the records you keep yourself: payout invoices, earnings exports, and a log of refunds and chargebacks. Export them through the year, not in the week before a deadline.
Which records to keep through the year
- Your tax interview confirmation, W-9 or W-8BEN.
- Every payout invoice, with your VAT number once you have added one.
- Monthly exports of gross earnings, refunds and chargebacks.
- For US creators, the 1099-K, checked against your own totals when it arrives.
- Receipts for business costs such as generation, hardware and software, for whoever prepares your return.

Questions people ask
Does Fanvue take taxes out of my earnings?
No. Fanvue says it does not withhold any taxes on behalf of creators. You are paid without any tax taken off, and you have to pay tax yourself where you live.
Will Fanvue send me a 1099-K?
Yes, if you are a US creator above the IRS reporting threshold. The threshold is payments of more than $20,000 in more than 200 transactions in the year. Fanvue says the form arrives by 31 January of the following year.
Why is my 1099-K higher than what Fanvue paid me?
It reports gross earnings before fees, refunds and chargebacks. The IRS says fees and refunds are not taxable income, and you can deduct them from the gross amount.
Do non-US creators need a W-8BEN for Fanvue?
Fanvue asks every creator to complete a tax interview. Non-US individuals fill in a W-8BEN, and businesses fill in a W-8BEN-E. The 1099-K process does not apply to non-US creators without US-source income.
Does Fanvue charge VAT?
Fanvue adds VAT at checkout to what fans pay. It says a creator's VAT registration does not change the price fans pay. If you are registered, you can add your VAT number, and it then appears on your payout invoices.
