In short
- "Banned" and "reach-restricted" are different things. A missing AI label almost always leads to the second one.
- Instagram says it notifies the unlabelled AI profiles it detects. Account Status shows whether the restriction is on.
- There is an objection process for this restriction. File it in Account Status, not through a general appeal form.
- Instagram says a successful objection puts your profile and content back into recommendations.
- A fully disabled account is a different, more serious case with a different appeal. A separate guide covers it.

If you think your AI personaAI persona An AI persona is an invented character. Her images, videos and captions are generated with AI instead of photographed, but she is presented and followed like any other account. Open the glossary account is banned, it probably is not. “Banned” means removal: the account is gone, or disabled, or one strike away from it. Most AI persona accounts caught by Instagram’s AI-generated profile label get something smaller: less reach. If you mix the two up, you file the wrong appeal for the problem you have.
What “banned” usually means for an AI account
Accounts that depict an AI-generated person and do not set the label receive reduced distribution: less surfacing on recommendation surfaces to people who do not already follow the account.

That hurts, because for a persona account recommendations are close to the only way to reach new people. But it is not a ban. The account is not gone. Followers still see your posts. Nothing has been removed. What has changed is how Instagram ranks you. A ranking change does not come with a message that explains why one number dropped.
How do I tell whether this is what is happening to my account? Ask it in #question-thread. Someone there has usually had the same problem.
How to check Account Status for the restriction
Unlabelled profiles Instagram detects are notified. Creators can check in Account Status whether their account is no longer eligible for recommendations, and can file an objection against a restriction they believe was made by mistake. If the objection succeeds, the profile and content are displayed in recommendations again.

Two things follow from this. First, there is a place to look: Account Status. If the restriction looks wrong, you file an objection there. Second, Instagram says it notifies the unlabelled profiles it detects. But a notification is easy to miss among everything else the app sends, and a drop in reach can have other causes. Account Status tells you which one it is, so you do not have to guess from Insights.
If your persona account reaches fewer non-followers and the number stays down, check Account Status before you assume the worst. You can see the label restriction there. Most other ranking effects do not show up there.
What did not work
Treating the label as an A/B test across two accounts
Before we found the Account Status check above, we tried to measure the effect ourselves. We labelled one persona account, left a second one without the label, and planned to compare non-follower reach over fourteen days. We stopped on day six and had learned nothing. The two accounts differed in too many ways for a gap between them to mean anything. The full story is in Instagram’s AI-generated profile label.
If your account is fully disabled
Everything above is about a reach restrictionReach restriction A reach restriction is when a platform quietly limits how many non-followers see an account. It does not remove the account and it does not tell you. Open the glossary on a live, working account. That is the kind of “banned” the AI label causes. A fully disabled account is a different and more serious case, with a different appeal. Read the general guide to it before you write anything.
Risk, bans and recovery covers that case in full. One lesson from it holds on every platform: an appeal that tries to persuade does not work. It does not help to say how long the account existed or how carefully it followed the rules. Reviewers look for a fact they can check that shows the decision was wrong. They do not look for an argument about fairness. The appeal that gets accounts back is three sentences: the action was taken on this date, here is what the notice claims, here is why the claim does not apply.
What to do, in order
- Check Account Status before you assume the account is banned. Most of what people search for as “banned” is the reach restriction above. The account is not disabled.
- If it is the reach restriction, set the label and file the objection in Account Status. Do not use a general “my account was disabled” form. That form is for a different problem.
- If the account really is disabled, the appeal that works states one fact that can be checked. It does not ask for a second chance. Risk, bans and recovery has the longer version, including how to set up your business so that one disabled account does not end it.
The rule behind the reach restriction is Instagram’s AI-generated profile label. Read it before you file anything, so your objection answers the rule that was applied. TikTok applies its AI labelAI label An AI label is a platform’s own marker that says an account or a post is AI-generated. Open the glossary rule to each video, not to the whole account. That changes what one mistake costs: does TikTok allow AI influencers. If TikTok has already removed a video or restricted your account, TikTok AI account banned? covers each appeal path.

Questions people ask
Is my AI influencer account really banned, or something else?
Probably something else. If an AI persona account has no label, Instagram says the consequence is reduced distribution in recommendations. The account is not removed, it gets no strike, and followers still see posts. For most accounts in this position, "banned" is the wrong word.
How do I check if this has happened to my account?
Instagram’s creators blog says it notifies the unlabelled AI profiles it detects. It also says Account Status shows whether the account can still be recommended. Check there. Do not guess from Insights.
How do I appeal an Instagram reach restriction tied to the AI label?
Instagram states that you can file an objection in Account Status against a restriction you believe is a mistake. If the objection succeeds, your account can be recommended again. This is a different and smaller process than appealing a fully disabled account.
What if my account was really disabled, not just reach-restricted?
That is a separate and more serious case with its own appeal. The risk and recovery guide covers it in full, including what an appeal that works says and what most people write instead.
